25th Anniversary of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.

The 15 April 2016 saw the 25th Anniversary of the final report for the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. The commission established by the Hawke Government examined 99 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander deaths in custody during the period 1 January 1980 and 31 May 1989. The report contained 339 recommendations relating to policing and prison practices as well as social factors such as housing, health, employment, education, alcohol etc. The report led to many changes in Indigenous policy and still largely relates to Continue reading

Position Vacant – Legal Practitioner

Sisters Inside, a Brisbane-based independent community organisation that advocates for the human rights of women in the criminal justice system, has a position vacant for a short term contract for a Legal Practitioner. The role will be in assessing women prisoners’ eligibility for Supreme Court bail, making bail applications to the Supreme Court, facilitating women’s access to the supports they require to access/maintain bail and to train women prisoners to become peer Bail Clerks.
