2016 National Indigenous Law Awards

The Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department is calling for nominations for the 2016 National Indigenous Law Awards (NILA) and applications close 9.00am Monday 17 October 2016. These awards are designed to acknowledge the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lawyers and law students from across Australia. There are two prizes available the National Indigenous Legal Professional of the Year Award (Professional Award) and the National Indigenous Law Student of the Year Prize (Student Prize).

The Professional Award is open to any Indigenous person who is currently admitted as a solicitor or barrister in Australia. The person can self-nominate or be nominated. The prize is valued at $5,000. The application for this prize must address the following criteria: championing the rights of Indigenous persons in a legal environment; exceptional commitment to providing legal representation, advice or assistance; and demonstrated commitment to, and pursuit of, professional development. The Student Award is open to any Indigenous person who is enrolled in an undergraduate law degree in Australia. The prize is valued at $2,500. The application for this prize must address the following criteria: academic excellence; community involvement; and the student’s future aspirations.
